"homely" place to stay, good value”

location, friendly staff and excellent value forr money

3rd and final stay. Stopped a few nights on this visit. The guesthouse did not disappoint. Staff always friendly and helpful and full of good advice. Felt "homely" and welcoming. Drank copious tea and still didn't get free breakfast as we get up and get on before 07:30. Return of the construction noise from next door - but everything else outweighed this. Would definitely recommend this guesthouse as a base for exploring Kuala Lumpur. If we return to Kuala Lumpur we would stop again. No need to change anything.

    Fantastic service”

I booked a single room for one night, only to be told that all the single rooms were fully occupied. Fortunately, they upgraded me to a double room for free. I kid you not, it was the most comfortable double room ever even for a fan room (it must be better for the AC room). The staffs are great and friendly, and if you are an extravert, you will fit right in place. The communal area is open air so you will get plenty of fresh air in the middle of the city. Do remember to buy your own soap and shampoo, and if you plan on cooking, your own groceries. Cleanliness is really tip top and I would recommend Step Inn so much to all fellow solo travellers. Kudos.

    friendly and great location”

location, helpful staff and value for money

2nd brief stay in Kuala Lumpur. Even faster book in (as return visitor), map provided on previous visit helped to organise sightseeing of Chinatown. Helped ourselves to free tea and coffee. Again didn't sample the free breakfast as early morning departure for flight to Borneo. Great place to meet like-minded travellers. Heard the building works on this visit but "management" got the noise stopped.

    We love the step inn!!”

This was the 3rd time we have stayed in the step inn, the location is perfect for us just on the edge of China town, it is much cleaner and has better facilities than anywhere else we have stayed in China town! The staff are great, they are all really friendly and helpful, they make you feel at home! It has been 2 years since we last stayed here and the manager recognised us which is always nice. There is a great atmosphere with plenty of space to hang out and meet new people and free tea and coffee all day! What more could you want!

Great Location, Clean, Cheap, and friendly Hosts!”

Quiet at night, great location, very good price, friendly staff

We booked two nights for our entry into Malaysia, figuring we could then figure out where we would stay if Step Inn wasn't to our liking. We really enjoyed it and ended up booking a few more nights! We booked a double room and they must have overbooked and put us into a 3 person room with AC (instead of the fan room we payed for) at no extra cost. The hotel was clean with hot showers (just gotta figure out how to make the machine work first! and a nice, simple breakfast. After coming from Australia, where we were staying in a "cheap hostel" that was full of drunken madness and we didn't get any sleep, coming here was very restful. It is a bit off the main street, near a hindu temple, and was quiet at night. There is also lots of great food nearby. We walked to all of the big tourist sights from the hotel, like Chinatown (close), KL Petronas Towers (25 minute walk, but pleasant), Bukit Bintang (15 minute walk), and more! We really enjoyed exploring the city from here and will go back when we finish our travel in Malaysia, before we fly out of KL! The staff were very friendly too. It is a budget hotel and is a bit rundown, but it's clean and a great value for the price! The cleaning chemicals they use in the rooms smell funny when you first walk in, but will disappear with time or bring some incense!

welcoming place in a great location”

friendly staff, great locaton and value for money

1st night in Malaysia. No problem locating the hotel. Fast check in, very helpful staff, provided with a very useful Kuala Lumpur map which was to prove useful on our subsequent stays. Great proximity to the bus station, handy as we awoke 20 minutes before our bus was due to depart (and made it!). Didn't have time to check out all the facilities due to short stay and sleep. Not disturbed by building noise on this visit.

Proximity to city centre, friendly staff , clean rooms

Stayed at Step Inn Guest House for just a night with a friend. The room was a double Room (Ac) and bathroom en suite. Just enough for a night, clean bathroom and a comfortable bed with working AC as well. Common kitchen with basics .Met a few friendly lodgers and the staff are very helpful in planning your travel agenda. Preferable for back-packers,it's a budget hostel. Thanks you. Good place, good location, even better staff”

    Location, staff

While the rooms could use some more decoration, the Guesthouse on its whole is a good bargain place. The location couldn´t be better for the price one pays. It´s just 5 minutes walk from Puduraya bus station, allowing for easy transfers across Malaysia and 7 minutes walk to LRT lines 3 & 4. It´s also at walking distance of places like Masjid Jamek, Chinatown or the Central Market. The common facilities are pretty well maintained and clean. The WIFI is fails sometimes and doesn´t always reach the rooms, though. Now truly the great value of this place it´s the people running it. Living in Malaysia as a foreigner, I have been exposed to cheating and scamming way too many times and thus feel really grateful when I encounter honest advice and criteria in answers. Not only the staff proved to be useful at all times in the several times I stayed but I heard them giving advice to other guests that I knew were right and looked for their interest. I have seen them helping tourists to avoid being scammed, explained the best way to get here or there and to recommend good local places to eat. Priceless. By mistake, I booked at fan twin room instead of a double room. I asked the staff if we could change and they checked... ending up giving us a family room with an air con double bed and extra bed room. That was impressive. In return for their help we didn´t use the air con, just the fan which was more than enough.

    Homie and Relexing Hostel”

    The atmosphere

i like the atmosphere of the hostel. it is very homie and friendly. normally people choose to stay in a hostel, thinking that they only need a place to sleep. but step inn even makes you want to lazy around in its kitchen near the windy balcony where you can feel the life of kl to the fullest. if not, the living and reception area is another choice. it is the place where you can sit on the sofa, get some chats with alan, one of the owner or greet new guests checking-in. i will come back to this hostel when i happened to be in kl again.

Decent guesthouse but not the best value”

Good location, free breakfast, nice lobby

We arrived in KL at night and tired after a bus trip from Penang. However, we arrived to find out there was no water in the entire hotel. Of course, this was not there fault, but it was a huge inconvenience. It was off until the next afternoon. They didn't compensate us at all for it, although they did prepare one room that had water where people could shower. Another negative was they advertised wifi in all the rooms, but we couldn't pick up the signal in our 3rd floor room. The guesthouse was fine...the rooms were decent and the shared bathrooms were clean. But, it's a little expensive for a double with fan and shared bathroom. We also stayed at Serai Inn which we liked much more where we got a cozier room with AC for the same price.

Room's OK, nice staff and owner”

    friendly staff, location and price

Stayed there on Nov'13 and enjoyed it.It's noisy and the water in our room was not running well in the morning due to the construction work next door.I booked an en-suite room, but ended up using the shared bathroom upstairs, but it's clean and the water running ok.The owner's there and he's very friendly. He gave us a map and detailed instructions on how & where to go.We're six adults and a young children, and I was a little hesitate at first, thinking that it'll be packed with loud and drunken youngsters. But the guests turned up nice and friendly.Nice staffs, toast and jam for breakfast included, free flow of tea & coffe. The next day,we asked for the room to be cleaned, clean towel and a new bed sheet when we're out,and when we're back, it's done. It's nice & quite to sit in the terrace during the night. The owner speaks English, which is great since my Malay isn't that good.He joined in when I sat there,I forgot his name, but ended up calling him Abang(older brother in bahasa and malay).I found repeated guests stay there. There is common area with sofa, tv and small library where you can exchange your books, communal kitchen with fridge to store your food. The wifi is free but only worked on the 1st floor, 7/11 with ATM around the corner and Chinatown is within walking distance, halal indian food restaurant, walking down the street at the right side of the guesthouse which is cheap and lovely.I like the neighborhood and surroundings, not that far off from the street but quite during the night. It's an old building which I loved and there is an Indian temple nearby. On the last day,we need to book a bus to S'pore, and a nice old Chinese uncle helped us to find it.He was really nice and escourted us to the bus station, helped us with heaps of our luggage, and didn't leave until he saw us safe and secure in our seat. He lost his home and the owner let him stay there, which I think is very generous. I will definetely stay there again if I come to KL.

Good location, good staff, very reasonably priced”

Low price, walking distance of main KL attractions (or transit), very helpful staff

the guesthouse is a bit older, and not as clean as other guesthouses i have stayed in. however, the price and service provided is well worth the stay. the staff is very helpful and polite, and are able to graciously help you with navigating kl and helping you plan your route(s) to other cities outside of kl. there is also a nice lounge space for hanging out with other guests. the location is fairly central to most of the kl attractions and transit systems (to the petronas towers, paviliion, etc.). there are also a number of good places to eat nearby, as well as chinatown within 5 minutes walking distance. it is a bit of a walk (10-15 minutes) from bukit bintang, which is the main backpacker guesthouse and bar area of the city.

    Helpful and friendly staff

we arrived with 6 people and the room is very basic with beds and fan only (we couldn't find the electric plug in the room so we had to charge our phones outside. anyway, room is clean and price is quite cheap. the staff is extremely friendly, you can ask them anything for help. the location is good and close to bukit bintang and chinatown (about 15 min walk). i'll definitely step in again !

Great staff, simple clean rooms and common area”

    Helpful staff. large room, location

The staff were super friendly and helpful. They supply maps directions and suggestions on what to do. They have a supply of cheap cold water at the ready. Rooms are simple but large, Common area has t.v. and lounge. There is a simple kitchen to make your own food. The breakfast was labelled as "simple" but is just toast and coffee. The street is a quiet street just outside Chinatown centrally located between Chinatown and the Golden Triangle. I have stayed in K.L. a few times and this is one of my fav areas (quiet but still easy to get everywhere). Public transport is less than 5 min walk away to get you anywhere in the city.

    acceptable guesthouse”

near puduraya station and petaling shopping street, china town

The room has enough space for 2 persons, no smell, big bed, 1 mirror and table + chair. I booked a fan room but they give me aircon room. However, aircon has no remote so too cold when working long, didnt switch it on. Clean floor. Common shower is not too bad. I think it's cleaner than Birdnest guesthouse in China town that I stayed once. But Birdnest is cheaper. Breakfast with toast + jam + butter. Tea and coffee all day.
