Walking into the lobby reminded me of the grace of old hotels. Well maintained and clean. Room was basic but provided everything needed. Located in old city down near the port so be ready for real local on-the-ground environment, but we always felt welcomed and safe. (Daytime exploration.) Complimentary breakfast was an excellent mix of Malaysian and continental buffet. Maybe 20-25min drive from/to airport by Grab car depending on traffic.

Pros - Although it is an old hotel, the room and bathroom were spacious, neat, clean, and well-maintained. Nice sea view from my room even though it was quite a distance away. The pillows and bed were comfortable. I have a good night's sleep. The air-con and lights were working just fine. The location was strategic, within a 5-10 mins walk to the mall, market, restaurants, and shops. The roads were also not crowded with vehicles. The breakfast was limited but delicious. Worth the money! Cons - There were only 2 power sockets, beside the dressing table and pantry, none was at the bedside. The shower glass would be flooded every time you finished taking your bath and the floor was quite slippery when wet. Tips - Please get the housekeeping staff to make up your room before 12 pm because they will end their work at 12 pm (according to one of the staff when I asked him to come back at 2 pm to clean up my room). Overall, I enjoyed my stay and the service.

As a returning guest to Hotel Sandakan, I’ve generally had great experiences, and this stay was no different in many ways. Location The hotel is in a convenient spot, surrounded by many attractions (though I wasn’t particularly interested in them). For travelers looking to explore, the location is ideal. Cleanliness & Facilities The hotel is very clean and well-maintained. They've made many upgrades to their facilities, which is a nice touch, though I didn’t get the chance to explore all of them. Room The room was comfortable and spacious, fitting three adults and one young child with ease. No complaints here — it was a good space to relax in. Breakfast The breakfast here is one of the highlights. It’s not just basic offerings; they really go all out. I fell in love with the butter fried rice, and the variety available was impressive. The kitchen staff were incredibly nice and professional — I loved them all! Service Unfortunately, the service from the front desk left a bad taste in my mouth. On the day of check-in, around 11 a.m., a male receptionist refused my early check-in, even though I had arranged it with the hotel team a day prior for an additional RM50 fee. He accused me of lying, which was both shocking and disappointing. This encounter alone is why I feel compelled to give 1 star for the service. Overall Experience Despite that incident, I still love Hotel Sandakan. It remains my favorite place to stay when visiting Sandakan, and aside from the unfortunate interaction with the receptionist, my stay was enjoyable. I’m hoping future visits will be better!
