This British colonial government quarters, called Newlands, was once occupied by famous American writer, Agnes Newton Keith, who penned Land Below The Wind in 1939. Two books followed her first success, namely Three Came Home (1946) and White Man Returns (1951). With the exception of the second book, Land Below the Wind and White Man Returns were written in the house on the hill where she had the best views of Sandakan Bay at the front and the Sulu Sea at the back.

We were pleasantly surprised with the rainforest surroundings. The deluxe rooms were spacious, clean and air conditioner is set at a pleasant temperature (not freezing!). Bathroom had a bathtub as well as a shower. Hotel staff is fantastic, helpful and friendly. Food is nice, but don’t expect gourmet style. We recommend this hotel to all who are seeking somewhere that’s affordable with a pool and gym. It is a pleasant walk to the town centre, about 1-2km. Agnes Keith Historic house is along the way. Taxi drivers are available at the hotel any time of the day and most are pleasant enough. We hired one for the whole day. He took us where ever we wanted and also told us some history of the area.

Everytime I stay overnight at Sandakan this place will always be my top pick. The place is extremely cozy, safe and quiet. The best part about this hotel is the cheap price but still offers the best room quality. Fresh smell and clean. People traveling in group should consider this one for sure.. They don't provide breakfast but you can just walk across the street and find restaurants (and there's a bowling centre too!)

Very nice, rooms are great, large, cosy and fresh! Swimmingpool is great! Food is very good, breakfast the best we had in ages during our asia trip, Friendly staff, english sometimes a hassle. Tours better not to be booked in this hotel! That was a bugger for us! They have a kind of a tourdesk in reception, but nobody actually can advise about the tours, at the end after a long time of asking and try n to get the best info, we booked a day tour via the hotel with sukau Greenview travel! This was a waste of time and money. It supposed to be a day trip to the jungle we should see some amazing animals they promised. At the end, they picked us up at 12.45 noon, we drove and wait for people 3 hours! So arrived at 4 noon at the river, were we had a boat trip 2 hours, and we only saw some monkeys you see everywhere in asia and 1 bird! After that we had a really nice dinner, and back for 2.5 hour drive, so bassicly 2 hours on a boat where you see nothing, 5.5 hour drive and charge 400 renggit for the 2 of us! Ridiculous amount of money for what you get! Same with taxi s from hotel, to much!

I've stayed here twice now because the value for what you get is just too good to pass up. Pros: - cheap - facilities were great: air conditioning, comfy beds, private bathrooms with hot showers, tv and fridge - great restaurant with cheap food in the lobby - very friendly staff Cons: - it's a bit out of the way, about a 15 minute walk to central Sandakan - not much to do around the hotel, however there is a night market about 10 minutes away I'd recommend this place to any type of traveller looking for cheap accommodation that has everything you could want from a hotel.

The hotel was clean, cheap, affordable, provided clean towels. We actually checked in in the middle of the night and the staff was awaken from his sleep however he served us immediately and attentively even though he couldn't find my agoda booking sheet due to the fact that I had just booked through agoda a couple of hours ago and it hasn't been processed yet. But everything was done quickly and no problem!

We booked this hotel at a very good rate in my opinion, RM67 per night. Room is very basic but clean enough. Toilet is not great but reasonable, ants were visible. Our double size bed was quite comfortable, sheets and pillows seems clean, although I woke up with itchy bites on my legs the next morning - can’t say for sure it is from the bed or room. The reception was friendly and helpful. Location is by the road facing a temple nearby, quiet, about 5-10 minutes to town or jetty, we got around by Grab taxi easily for very cheap rate to town, rm5. Overall, if you want to save money and still have a reasonable room to stay, I would recommend Lady anne.

they allow early check-in as we are travelling with a baby which is very considerate. The size of the room is small but most importantly its clean & the furniture is still pretty new. Location is just a few minutes drive to the main town as its is located in between the old town and the rest of the attractions. We rented a car for easy & leisure sight seeing in Sandakan. The food are great & cheap at coffee shop and "pasar" (market). Seafood are plenty with a very reasonable price.

the staff was friendly and the location central to everything you'd like to do in sandakan. the hotel itself isn't great. it's a second floor walk up, quite dirty and water in the shower that did not stay hot long enough to get clean. there were rats running about the common area in the evening. the breakfast included is actually a toaster and a loaf of bread with a jar of jam. there is hot coffee and tea around the clock. the ac worked great.

the hotel is actually inside a shophouse lot and its main entrance is located at the back...there's a cineplex,restaurant,bowling,market and pub nearby.this hotel good for young adventurous couple only...its a great hotel that fit its cheap price and with basic amenities and a great starting point to discover Sandakan..try go to Buli Sim Sim seafood because its very cheap and delicious..also try go to Sepilok Orang Utan Center which is quite far.if go to sepilok,better stay at sepilok jungle resort hotel which is the same price.

we reached sandakan at 1 am and all the hotel was fully booked. it was a tiring journey and at last we sleep inside the car. early morning i manage to book this hotel through agoda. after get my confirmation we directly go to the hotel and the staff was really helpful to let us check in even its only 8am...the room was nice. i really apreciate what miracle agoda can give to us..
