"We booked this hotel on same day (as our whale watching tour got cancelled that day) and was very happy they could accommodate us. Our room was simple but clean and had a heater that was working and enough blankets to keep us warm. The location is great too, with grocery and some restaurants just walking distance. The staff was great - friendly, hospitable, and gave great recommendations!"

It was coffee and cereals but it helps to start your day. The staff were helpful and friendly. The only thing was the laundry was out of order, but there are few within the walking distance."

"fairways is a wonderful, luxurious property in which to spend a couple of days exploring the area. the fact that it is just south of town is fine if you have a car - if not i suggest staying on the esplanade. the apartment has excellent appointments and was wonderfully warm, with the large fireplace quite an interesting feature, as apparently it is mainly for looks! i still felt some heat coming from it in the lounge area in any case. there is some construction going on across the way, which whilst mildly annoying did not detract from our stay. go for a walk around the new estate - the views from the higher roads are sensational. we drove to the summit of stage 7 of the estate late at night and the star show was quite amazing, best i have seen in years. we even tried to feed the ducks in the pond from the jetty - but they must be quite well fed (or fed up of us tourists) and they completely ignored us. no matter, we loved kaikoura and would absolutely stay at fairways again. "Be prepared to walk quite a bit if you take the bus to kaikoura and stay here because it’s about half an hour walk from where the intercity bus stops. If you have a car, then that’s good because the place is a bit far from everything. I booked a private room but the room was dusty and I’m allergic to dust. The owner was nice enough to let me change rooms. I stayed in a dorm but i was the only one in there so it was still considered a private room i guess. The dorm room was better than the small private room. "
