“Just ok”
This is the first time we have encountered such an unsatisfactory initial check-in experience at Imperial Hotel, particularly in terms of room cleanliness, maintenance condition, and accuracy of room information. From a facilities and maintenance perspective, the air-conditioning system in the initially assigned unit appeared not to have been properly serviced, as it was unable to achieve acceptable cooling performance, which directly affected guest comfort. In addition, the room configuration did not match the advertised description, which indicated two bathrooms, including one private bathroom. More concerning, one of the bathrooms emitted a strong and unpleasant odour, and inspection revealed a damaged float valve causing continuous water issues. The bathroom floor was heavily stained with black marks, reflecting poor housekeeping and inadequate sanitation standards at the time of check-in. Furthermore, all WC toilet seats were in unacceptable condition, with visible brown watery stains and degraded, rough surfaces where the seat coating had peeled off. In the same stained bathroom, one light fitting was not functioning, and the toilet flush was inoperative due to the damaged float valve, rendering the bathroom partially unusable. We initially raised concerns purely regarding cleanliness and requested housekeeping support. However, the first two cleaners who attended declined to clean, stating that the task was “not at their level.” A third, more senior cleaner subsequently attended and completed the cleaning satisfactorily; however, the underlying maintenance defects in the bathroom remained unresolved, and the bathroom was still not functional. In addition, most of the Formica-finished doors were visibly damaged, with peeling surfaces and mould growth along the door frames. Similarly, the silicone sealant around almost all sink basins was heavily contaminated with mould, indicating prolonged moisture exposure and inadequate preventive maintenance. The television installation was also improperly connected, with loose cabling resulting in poor functionality. This issue was temporarily rectified by my brother, which should not have been necessary for a guest and indicates a lack of basic room readiness checks prior to check-in. Lastly, the lighting throughout the initial unit was excessively dim, creating an unwelcoming and uncomfortable atmosphere upon arrival, further reinforcing the impression that basic pre-check-in inspections were not adequately carried out. That said, we would like to acknowledge that the hotel subsequently arranged for a unit change, and the replacement unit was notably better. In this unit: Air-conditioning systems were functioning properly and provided adequate cooling; Lighting levels were brighter and more welcoming; Floors and toilets were generally clean and acceptable for occupancy. However, it was also noted that one bathroom in the replacement unit was locked, as it had not been in use for an extended period. While we understand the operational reason, there was no maintenance label placed on the door, and such limitations should have been clearly disclosed in the room advertisement to avoid misinterpretation. Additionally, while the replacement unit was overall acceptable for stay, some silicone sealants remain mouldy and would benefit from replacement to maintain hygiene standards. Overall, while the final unit provided was acceptable for occupancy, the initial experience and communication gaps highlight areas requiring improvement, particularly in pre-check-in inspections, housekeeping coordination, maintenance transparency, and accuracy of advertised room details.
